I learned that trick from a Singer sewing book and it saves loads of time.

I hear you about making something that doesn’t require fitting!! Just started a muslin of a dress today….fitting issues….grrrr….

I have some leather scraps I bought in LA. maybe a zipper pouch would be a good intro to leather. I also heard that going slow and using a long stitch length (like a regular basting stitch) is good as is practicing first on some scraps. Sounds like you already knew all that–it looks great!
