Abstraction
Abstraction is something I struggle with in painting. A lot of the art I like best has an abstract quality to it. But I don’t quite know how to incorporate that into my paintings. When am I being abstract and when am I just being lazy? or messy?
Since I’m a scientist as well, I like to think that abstraction works when it captures something true. Something about how color works, or how light appears to us, or how it felt to be in a particular place on a particular day. My friend Alan, also a scientist by training, has a different take.
